1. a white lie 선의의 거짓말
ex) It is sometimes necessary to tell a white lie to the patient.
때로는 환자에게 선의의 거짓말을 하는 것이 필요하다.
2. a mixed blessing 좋기도 하고, 나쁘기도 한것
ex) Sometimes being a survivor can be a mixed blessing.
때때로 생존자가 되는것은 좋기도하고, 나쁘기도 한것일 수 있다.
3. turn a deaf ear(to somebody/something) (~을) 귀담아듣지 않다.(무시하다)
ex) He turned a deaf ear to the rumours.
그는 그 소문들을 귀담아 듣지 않았다.
4. break the ice 서먹서먹한(딱딱한) 분위기를 깨다
ex) To break the ice, he talked about the weather.
그는 서먹서먹한 침묵을깨고. 날씨얘기를 꺼냈다.
5. storm in a teacup(UK)
= a tempest in a teapot(US)(별것도 아닌 걸 두고 벌이는) 괜한 소동
ex) It was just a storm in a teacup
그것은 그저그런 파란이었다.
6. by the skin of your teeth 간신히(가까스로)
ex) He escaped from the secret police by the skin of his teeth
그는 가까스로 비밀경찰에게서 탈출했다.
7. (just) around/round the corner (시간적) 바로 코 앞에, (공간적) 바로 근처에
ex) The summer vacation is just around the corner
곧 여름 방학이 온다.
8. have(get) butterflies in the stomach(tummy) 안달하다, 안절부절 못하다
ex) He had butterflies in the stomach whe he was on the stage for the first time.
그는 처음으로 무대에 섰을 때 안절부절 못했다.
9. a pain in the neck 아주 귀찮은 사람(것), 골칫거리
ex) That job is a pain in the neck
저일은 하기가 귀찮다.
10. break(pass) out (잠시)의식을 잃다.
ex) She lost too much blood and passed out.
그녀는 피를 너무 많이흘려서 정신을 잃었다.
11. beat around the bush 돌려말하다. 요첨을 피하다, 문제점을 꺼내 말하기를 주저하다.
ex) Don't beat around the bush - get to the point
돌려 말하지 말고 요점을 말해!
